Change the lives of girls - and maybe your own!

Be a Girls on the Run Coach!
(You don't need to be a runner - just believe in what the program is about.  You might end up a runner though (:)

  • Do you think GOTR sounds like a lot of fun?
  •
  • Do you want to be a role model and mentor for girls in your community?

• Do you have an interest in the issues facing young women today?

• Do you want to commit to the positive development of girls?

• Do you wish that a program that prepares girls for a lifetime of self-respect

and healthy living had been available when you were growing up?

If this interests you, please read on.  Scroll down to the bottom of the page for more information on what is required of our volunteer coaches.  One thing that is not required is you don't have to be a runner (:  GOTR might make you one, but our coaches are people who are passionate about what GOTR is about - empowering girls - and enjoy spending time with girls in 3rd - 6th grade.

Junior Coaches - (7th - 8th grade) - Please scroll down for more information about Junior Coaching.

The first step in volunteering is to complete an electronic volunteer application (it takes 5-10 minute to complete). The link below is only for coaches who will be volunteering in Spring 2012.  If you are interested in helping in the fall, please email jill@girlsontherungv.com.

Fall 2012 Coaches and Volunteers

- Click here to complete the Fall 2012 Coach Application

*All fall volunteers must complete the online coach application - returning coaches and new coaches.

The second step is to complete a background check. All volunteers must complete a background check every two years. We now have a system for volunteers to input their own information into our online Carolina Connections background check system.

If you know you completed the background check last year (Fall 2011) you do not need to complete it.  If you are a new coach, or did not complete it last year, please complete it.
Online Background Check (will take less than 5 minutes)
Click here for instructions on completing your online background check (you might want to print the instructions as they need to be followed verbatim).

The next step in volunteering is to attend a GOTR Coach Training, if you have not already attended one.  See our schedule of Summer 2012 Trainings below:

Finally, at least one coach from each site should plan to attend a pre-season coach meeting in your area - your County Coordinator will contact you with information on this meeting.

Summer 2012 New Coach Trainings

*The training listed below are the only New Coach Trainings that will be offered, so if you are interested in coaching and are new, please make sure you attend one of the above trainings*

*All new coaches are required to attend a New Coach Training.  Coaches are welcome to attend any of the trainings below.  When you complete your online application you will be asked what training you will attend - this will be your way of reserving a space and it will also ensure you get a reminder email (:

*Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes you can move in to the training, as we will do GOTR lessons!

*Please bring a water bottle

*Light lunch will be provided at all trainings (bring your own beverage if you want something besides water)

*E-reminders will go out to all coaches who signed up for the training on the online coach application 4-5 days prior to the training.

CPR/First Aid Training Dates and Locations
*CPR/First Aid Trainings will be cancelled if we do not have 8 people who have RSVP'ed by 5 days before the training.  If you commit to a training, please make sure you attend or send someone else in your place.  It costs us money to provide the training so it is really important that we have an adequate number of people at the training or GOTR loses money.  We need your help to insure that our trainings are cost-effective.  RSVP in advance and plan on attending.  We will let you know 4 days in advance if we do not have enough people attending to run the class.
Each site is required to have at least one CPR/First Aid certified coach!

Each of the trainings above will be followed by a CPR/First Aid training:

Girls on the Run needs Junior Coaches as well...

Learn, Dream, Live, Run… and serve in a leadership position at the same time!  Thanks to support from the Hopper Foundation, GOTR of Western Colorado is strengthening our Junior Coach program with the development of a Junior Coach Leadership Training.  We are piloting the program this spring and hope to expand the program for the 2011-2012 school year.

7th - 8th grade  girls have the opportunity to serve as Junior Coaches for GOTR teams. The job is fun and challenging. Junior Coaches are the best role models for younger girls in the program. They assist coaches in all activities and exemplify the Girls on the Run attitude! They serve as a leader and a model for younger girls in everything that they do. We ask all our Junior Coaches to make a commitment to Girls on the Run – a commitment to improve themselves through running and leading, and a commitment to the younger girls and fellow coaches they are working with.

Junior Coach Responsibilities: We have changed the application and training requirements to be a Junior Coach.  We are excited about our new Junior Coach training program - we hope you will join us this spring.   Email Jill@girlsontherungv.com for more information.  Application will be posted here soon.

  • Must be 7th – 8th  grade students
  • Serve as role model for girls and believe in the mission of Girls on the Run
  • Completion of a Junior Coach Leadership Training (date and location to be determined)
  • Encourage and cheer for all participants
  • Participate in games and workouts with the girls
  • Participate in the end of season 5K run/walk
  • Develop leadership skills by assisting the coaches
  • Is real self with girls at all times, and above all – have fun!
